Friends of Classics

In general, FoC offers grants up to a maximum of about £500, but more is available in special circumstances. Grants are paid to institutions only, not individuals. Grants are generally restricted to schools and summer schools who wish to begin or support courses in Latin, Greek, classical civilisation and ancient history. We do not give grants for travel abroad.

There are no grant application forms. If you wish to apply for a grant, write to Jeannie Cohen at Friends of Classics, 51 Achilles Road, London NW6 1DZ, or give her a preliminary call on 020 7431 5088. We are usually able to reply fairly quickly, but in order that we may do so, the application must fulfil the following requirements.

So please:
  • Apply on the institution's letter-head.
  • Be specific about how much is needed.
  • Give detailed costings.
  • Make clear why the money is needed.

If the application is successful, whether in part or whole, the cheque will be made out and sent to the institution.

The Hellenic Society Schools Sub-Committee makes grants to schools to assist projects concerned with the teaching of Greek or Greek Civilisation, from KS2 to Sixth Form. In recent years the Committee has been able to be particularly munificent in its awarding of grants, thanks to the great generosity of the Leventis Foundation. Typically, grants are for books and other teaching materials, setting up Classical Societies, Classics days or conferences, productions of Greek plays. Applications on behalf of individual pupils or teachers are not normally considered.

Applications from schools planning to start courses in Greek are especially welcome. The Committee regrets that it is unable to make awards to cover travelling expenses for school trips. Most grants are in the region of £50 to £350, but larger awards are occasionally made. The Committee meets through the year and can consider applications whenever presented.

Br /> The Roman Society's Schools Committee makes grants to schools to help promote the teaching of Latin and Roman studies. Most of the grants are awarded for the purchase of textbooks and other books on Roman topics, but the Committee also makes awards to groups and schools organising lectures or study days on Roman themes. Applications from schools planning to start courses in Latin are particularly welcome.

The annual budget is c. £7,000, and the usual level of award is £50 to £500. The Committee meets three times a year. Applications should be sent to the Secretary, Roman Society, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU to arrive by 1 February, 1 July or 1 November in any year, or e-mailed to office@romansociety.org. There is no special application form, but applicants should provide information about the level of their departmental budget, the type of courses taught, and in the case of applications for books, a list of the books wanted with their prices.

The Classical Association

The Classical Association awards in the region of £50,000 each year to classical projects and conferences, mainly in the UK.

The Association will consider applications for: subventions to summer schools and to institutions offering extra-mural courses in Greek, Latin and classical civilisation; bursaries for teachers attending courses abroad, notably the British School at Athens Easter Course; support of Greek and Latin reading competitions arranged by CA branches; support of regional Greek or Roman days or of school conferences; subventions to academic conferences, particularly when of broad appeal and held in major centres, with a view especially to assisting students, teachers and East European scholars to attend.

The CA runs its own bursary scheme for students (undergraduate, graduate, PGCE) and teachers attending the annual CA Conference held in April each year.

Decisions on grant applications are normally made by Council which meets at the start of April and in mid-November each year. There is no formal application form but if you would like to make an application please write to us with as much information as possible about the project/conference.
