OPPORTUNITIES FOR PART-TIME AND INDEPENDENT STUDY OF GREEK AND LATIN

Many colleges of Further Education offer courses in Greek and Latin. A major provider in London in The City Lit, which offers a full range of courses in Greek and Latin from beginners upwards: www.citylit.ac.uk. Attending one of the many Summer Schools which take place up and down the country each year is a popular way to learn classical languages. These offer intensive and affordable tuition to students of all levels, from beginners to advanced. Locations include London, Wells, Lampeter and Sunderland (further Summer Schools also offer courses in the history and civilization of the ancient world). Weekend Residential Courses in Greek and Latin are put on by The University of Cambridge Board of Continuing Education from September to May each year. These are held at Madingley Hall, Cambridge and accommodate all level of learners, from beginners to advanced. Many University Departments offer external students the opportunity to attend undergraduate language classes and/or Extra Mural classes in classical languages. In London, for example, UCL offers a Continuing Education scheme for students wishing to sit in on a range of classical language classes and Birkbeck offers various Pre-Degree and Short Courses in Greek and Latin. Contact your local university for details.

The Open University offers supported Open Learning opportunities in both Greek and Latin, allowing the languages to be studied by distance learning with the support of a tutor. Reading Classical Greek and Reading Classical Latin cater for complete beginners, with Continuing Classical Greek and Continuing Classical Latin available for more advanced students. Opportunities to study undergraduate courses by Distance Learning also exist at the University of Lampeter: www.lamp.ac.uk/classics. The Cambridge Schools Classics Project runs a scheme to support Independent Learners wishing to learn Latin at their own pace: visit the web site at www.cambridgescp.com and click on 'Independent Learners' for details.

For those opting for Self Study, there are numerous books on the market catering for students of all levels. If you are looking for some one-to-one help, e-mail the Joint Association of Classical Teachers (JACT) office, who have a national database of Personal Tutors: office@jact.org. A list of Latin tutors is also available on the Association for Latin Teaching site: www.arlt.co.uk. Alternatively, contact your local university department: they may be able to put you in touch with a suitable teacher or student. A further option is to join an Internet Study Group such as quasillum: www.quasillum.com.

Finally, there is also a whole host of exciting Internet Resources out there. For those embarking on the study of Greek for the first time, the Open University's Interactive Greek site is invaluable: www.open.ac.uk/Arts/greek and for students trying to get to grips with Greek vocabulary and grammar, the Eton Greek Software Project is a must: www.etoncollege.com (click on 'Eton in Action' then 'Greek Project').
